The Roots of Retail
The
word retail comes from the 13th C. French word “tailler”, which means
"to cut off, clip, pare, divide". It was first recorded as a noun with the meaning of a "sale
in small quantities". Ironically tailors also cut or sculpt individual clothing, the
kind of personalization that retailing cannot provide. Originally tailor shops made
everything on premise, but after the manufacturing era started in the early
18th century, the idea of altering or re-tailoring a readily made
suit “size” was created and hence the word re-tailors also seem to fit. Also
interestingly enough the word size comes from the term assize that was a
judgment or verdict usually or verdict or finding rendered by the jury.
As the fit of a garment would demand some judgment from the buyer or even the
onlookers. Early tailors had mixed feelings on ready-mades. On one hand they
were lowering standards of fit but on the other a convenience for hasty customers.
The loss of some 10,000 estimated tailors in Europe’s wars further prompted the
loss of tailoring standards of fit and the convenience of no tailoring. This also led to the strength of consumer
brands, sales clearances and more compromises to the “wor-shoppers” of
manufactured and advertised brands. What would be missing is the service providing
consumers with values and valuable information on “how to appear”.

A Tailoring Design Career?
Your Service Extraordinary
As you achieve tailoring knowledge you will be able to offer what most retail stores can’t, service and personal value. All without sewing skills. The market is full of people that buy on sale and have to find a tailor adding to the cost, as well as the problems of a satisfactory fit. This is because many suits cannot be altered properly once they are cut for the rack. If people pay full price, only then will they get professional alterations or tailoring included. Often the only minor alterations, not professional re tailoring.
A Little History of Tailoring
Since the 1700’s gentlemen have been posturing their bodily image and self-respect with this unspoken language for their benefit that led to some pretentious behavior. The word retailor comes from the word “tailor”. Originally tailor shops made everything on premise, but after the manufacturing era started in the early 18thth century, the idea of altering or re-tailoring a readily made suit in what was called a size, was created and hence the word re-tailors. The suitmakers opinion of compromising with this “size” was mixed. On one hand they were lowering standards on the other a tempting business approach for hasty customers and competition. The service providing consumers with valuable information would be missing. The days when fathers brought in their sons to the tailor shop to talk about success and dressing was on the demise. Missing was that essential human factor to the metaphor of sculpting one’s social life. A TD’s future is about sharing with professionals, the values of being good, feeling good and looking authentic.
Get out and Network
After you have followed the measurement chart and measuring sequences. Start practicing on friends and the compare to one of their suits as to how well you have measured. When you are close to perfect you can consider dressing yourself for success and networking. When you are starting your networking day it’s good to keep in mind talking tailoring with new contacts as a default conversation. Taking note of their choice of cloth possible their coordination of garments or something positive you find. Add your sincerity and skills and you will be entering a world of professionalism. You as an online course graduate will share the benefits of all TD graduates as we pass out thousands of Planet-tailored.com and Suitstyler.com cards. We will all benefit from search engine optimization, putting the site on top of google as people search for “how a tailored suit should fit”. By that time your name could be on the sites under your cities name or district.

Do Smart Men Consider Deep Dressing?
In sartorial terms one may not take clothing too seriously
and learn and enjoy dressing up a notch to practice one’s manners and
generosity (in kind). Shakespeare once said, “the whole world’s a stage” You
might even say it’s an urban adventure. Ironically often those that have developed
good character without dressing often benefit the most, when they do dress.
This happens naturally as deep dressers use clothing to frame, not overshadow
the character, allowing them to build the wardrobe and their people skills
together. Many brand followers
(sartorial idolatry) do so as a natural consequence of spiritual devoid, treating
tailoring as part of cloth and material with no human intermediary. In doing so
sort of dehumanize themselves by not understanding the elements of tailoring,
that is completion of shape (so only rumples or relaxed cloth that can later be
pressed, remains)
Clothing is everyman’s art and part of personal culture.
This healthy human activity is part of our documented human need for rituals
and the third level of humanities better behaviors according to psychologists.
Underneath, Games and Postulate (spirit based education, philosophy,
story-telling) The study of our environment including clothing is called Aesthetics.
When we stop thinking or questioning, we start believing, forfeiting
the wisdom of insecurity. Einstein maintained that he was not a genius but
simply suspended and reflected on issues rather than disregard them. Like being
on stage a little insecurity is invigorating and human. It’s a practice that is
healthy. Immunologists maintain that low stress and high stress are hard on the
system, but medium stress and relaxation is a good practice. So if its what’s
inside that counts, then are we not being insipid by dressing neutral or
mediocre? Are we not sabotaging ourselves by not showing up with a little
visual generosity? Psychologists deal with more and more people that pretend
that they have no power, no goals, and fail at self-esteem to creatively
proudly, “pay it forward”, band be grateful. Here erroneous belief is that if
its what’s inside that counts then one should turn the inside to the outside. It
becomes a rite of passage to be a role model, not just to quietly do good. The
men’s mandate is to enjoy being fully present with evidence of some competence visually
and emotionally to compliment others with deep listening skills.
String Theory, Music, Tailoring & Culture
Steve
Pelman
Forward- My Past
Note; This is a blog-book and chapters will repeat
some information to maintain the context The purpose is to best reach the
public to avail the values of this new brave new industry for the 21 st. C
My father was a latecomer as a retailor in men’s clothing
after WW2, he was also a great tenor in the community temple Choir. I
learned music to the point of passion that I want to transfer the discipline to
visual harmony. This is significant as dressing, and music are both vibrations
and a part of the new string theory of quantum physics. Waves permeate matter
and are indications of how culture or integration can work. Einstein could not
believe the “Quantum Entanglement” experiment and called it spooky. This is
readily available on YouTube and people would have to deny science. They would
also have to deny culture as a relative phenomenon. My disciplines are visual and audible and share
the same purpose to integrate via these rituals as any living species would
participate.
As the second son and fourth child, hearing his singing from
that great distance was often the most impressionable communication of power
and passion. This I took as a message of the power he emanated. Given in the
fifties that the news of the Holocaust and the constant air-raid sirens
threatening nuclear disaster, I was moved to consider rock and roll to be the new
electric messiah, or the “message or the pied piper of civilizing culture via
music via enlightening or wisdoms of engaging lyrics. It was well known the
term by Marshal McLuhan, that the medium was the message. And the multitudes of
baby boomers seem to be the spearhead for “sculpting civilization”. That was my
mission for many years. As it happens the Beatles beat me to the emancipation
of the Russian youth to the extent that the Russian government ended up their
ban on western music by actually selling Beatles albums. (according to CBC 5th
Estate Series)
But I soon realized the musical gamble I was playing with
the multitudes of dudes competing for glory. Most of the music was redundant tribal
(strong beat) entertainment and was not creating a larger pie or market, but
was simply just replacing love and loss songs. The industry was capitalizing on
human frailties, but hardly sculpting personalities and healthy souls for a
dynamic civilization.
When I was in college my profession said that Shakespeare
wrote, “In what tailor shall we find Plato”. Now this to me at the time was
interesting to look in the context of Shakespeare’s time to the human nature of
dress and its value among men and competition. As my father was a
“re”tailor, I was curious as to the
tailors history and decided to take a job with him at Sam’s Shirt Shop. After a
few years of selling suits, I realized
that even though all customers were content, that there was always one
client fit that was exemplary. This was when I opted out for a better standard.
Then along came the web to publish and proliferate with apps, those standards.
It was then I learned why there were no standards and why so
many suits did not fit. I realized the estimated loss of 10,000 European
tailors during WW2 among the change of values to electronics, cars and virtual
entertainment. The perfect suit has a value that was only handed down from a
father and his tailor to his son. This is virtually lost as the fathers mostly
do not know. Certainly I see country presidents and corporate VIP with bad
jacket collars who like the Emperors new clothes, failed due to trusting rather
than sharing the standards that link all men. Many of those sartorial secrets were buried in
the genocide of the 1940’s. My life
mission started there. To redeem the souls of those craftsmen, the values that
can be shared by all men. This is true today with scalable online training of
tailoring design and the shared economy to fight the new inflation. A man’s
dignity is not in how many suits are in his closet, but by his confidence in
just one suit.
What does fit do with becoming a tailoring designer?
As you achieve tailoring knowledge you will be
able to offer what most retail stores can’t. Only high end stores may offer world
class “standards of fit”. You see today retail stores do not retailor, but
actually just do minor alterations. The word retailor is actual used for
original tailor shops that after manufactured “sizes” came into production
would then re tailor the garment. This would allow for men to try on the
garment whereas before in cloth form they could not get a good idea. Without
proper balance of garment, a suit will wear out prematurely in the slacks and
jackets will contort its shape rather than shape to the body.
Your
future is about sharing with professionals the values of an authentic fit suit
and the self-respect clients get when you give them their personal Brand aid, rather
than what they have been buying that is a “Band-Aid.” We find that many appreciative clients tend to
lose weight after they realize how good they can look. Our factory direct
business competes with high overhead, expensive convenience purchases and lip
service salesmen. Add your sincerity and skills and you will be entering a world
of professionalism from one’s formal training and corporate culture initiation.
You
as an online course graduate will share the benefits of all TD graduates as we
pass out thousands of Planet-tailored.com and Suitstyler.com cards. We will all
benefit from search engine optimization, putting the site on top of google as
people search for “how a tailored suit should fit”. By that time your name
could be on the sites under your cities name or district.
Fashion
and superficiality is costing the planet in terms of wasted energy used for
garments that are thrown away. A good cloth properly made in a suit is
masculine in its substance. Something women admire and cannot find today
cheaply. The fact is proper fit is the object of beauty and not typical of most
subjective styled seasonal fashion. Although both is fun too. For personal
investment for your clients we will should you have to create a wardrobe
foundation to take all the wear and creates one’s strong image. Smart men build
and rotate their wardrobes so they are not always replacing. As quality suits
have doubled in cost in the last 10 years, the time is right to learn to
measure, sell and retain good clients. Since the 1700’s gentlemen have been posturing
their bodily image and self-respect with this unspoken language for their
benefit that led to some pretentious behavior. Your attitude is your choice as
long as you perform and respect your clients. You will not have to sell, but
simply dress well, socialize smartly, and enjoy your prospects. Authenticity is
a great value in a world of fakes, automated products, faceless salespeople and
hasty shoppers who believe its what’s inside that counts, as dressing well can
be associated with humility although, its best that you are great at something
to act humble. Once your clients see fit, they will have more confidence, enjoy
themselves and others by being the best suit in the room.

Today you can become a designer to the Stars with little sewing.
Tony Robbins was the first client of mine that I supported before he could afford to get clothes. His build demands tailoring. Listen to him and you can do well. Keep in mind he does not visit Vancouver and his suits are not mine anymore. So I am not responsible for their fit. To be successful means defining success with a vision, building your life around your convictions and sometimes feeling successful where you are, but continuing for other reasons such as family and community. To break your old mold, you need to study TD 30 min. daily for a month. (that’s 20 min with 10 minutes’ review of current and previous weeks notes) This is a formal technique although each has their own style of learning and improvements. Knowing how to earn new habits, prompts desire for more. Dressing well and serving others (that you learn to respect and benefit from) is the best lifestyle.
With online training, webinars and forums from Tailoring-designer.com you will have a virtual fraternity, ready to interact when you are. Keep thinking positive and exercise, its worked well for me or your mind will fall back to old bad habits. Winston Churchill had his “Black Dog” depression but overcame it with proactive and passionate action in order to achieve his plan of action. Success is a constant trial and error, effort and reflection accompanied by positive internal affirmations and occasionally externally. Working dynamically with new visualizations that encourage, a type of ritual or planned celebration of an accomplishment. This will mark time for more learning and another goal and celebration! It’s smart to challenge yourself and find the good questions. Real change demands lots of successful Kaizen or small "relished" change. Have the ability to embrace it enthusiastically. Kaizen is key your sculpting your future as a tailoring designer sculpts his cloth” with his choice of measurements.
